Maybe you didn’t notice. Or, maybe you knew something was off…but, you just couldn’t put your finger on it…couldn’t pin it down. But, you knew the world was askew…out of plumb…a half-bubble off center.
The reason is simple. There’s been no baseball.
Yep. We’ve had to endure football – another Alabama national championship and a Titans team that was a full bubble off center. Basketball is a poor substitute for the void of winter. Not one college team can decide who wants to be the clear-cut No. 1, and the NBA…well…it’s about as pathetic as the defense they play. The one shining light to dearth of baseball off-season was the NHL strike. Could we go an entire year without hockey? Apparently, no. Yeesh!
There is Hope
Baseball begins this week. High school teams get on the grass and the pop of the mitts and the ping of the bats will signal the impending arrival of spring.
The NCAA D1 teams kick off their seasons this Friday…the teams from the north will migrate south for warmer weather and baseball games will be aplenty.
The MLB Spring Training begins in earnest this week and rosters are filled with young guys hoping to make it to the Show. The Cactus League and the Grapefruit League will busy themselves preparing for a new season.
And, to whet our appetite, the World Baseball Classic starts March 2.
Yes, in just a few days, the earth will settle back onto its axis, the spring sun will try to chase away the winter wind, and men will become little boys again.
All is right with the world.
