God’s Holiness

Thursday, I had the privilege of having one of those late-night spiritual discussions with my son, Penn.  Among other things, we discussed the attributes of God, specifically his holiness and his glory.  I read to him the scripture that recounts when Moses wanted to see God’s face, but God wouldn’t let him because no man could see God’s glory and live.

Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

When we wrap our minds around the holiness of God, we begin to comprehend who he is.  And, that leads naturally to an awareness of who we are.  Our response to that awareness is worship.

Today, we’ll sing about this in our gathering as we focus our hearts and minds on the holiness of God.

We are a moment,
You are forever.
Lord of the ages, God before time.
We are a vapor,
You are eternal.
Love everlasting,
Reigning on high.…

[Chorus:]
Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.
Highest praises, honor and glory
Be unto your name, be unto your name.

We are the broken,
You are the healer.
Jesus, Redeemer,
Mighty to save.
You are the love song
We’ll sing forever
Bowing before You,
Blessing Your Name.

[Chorus:]
Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty!
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.
Higher praises, honor and glory
Be unto your name, be unto your name.
