Hamptons League Collegiate Baseball This is where my oldest son, Griffin, is playing ball this summer. And, a language he’s never heard.

Here are some of the best quotes about the game of baseball I know. The first one is my own…fell free to quote me. The others come from what I consider to be the best movie about baseball, Bull Durham.
“The greatest game given to mankind by the greatest God.” Mark Moore
I believe in the Church of Baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring…It’s a long season and you gotta trust it. I’ve tried ’em all, I really have, and the only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the Church of Baseball. Annie Savoy, Bull Durham
“The rose goes in the front, big guy.” Crash Davis, Bull Durham
“This guy is throwing a two-hit shutout. He’s shaking me off. You believe that? Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.” Crash Davis, Bull Durham
“Walt Whitman once said, “I see great things in baseball. It’s our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.” You could look it up.” Annie Savoy, BullDurham
My Top 10 Baseball Movies
Here’s my list of must-see movies about America’s greatest pastime, starting with #10. I recommend watching all of them on cable TV. The made-for-TV versions are not as profane.
Tom Hanks makes this a good one. Mix war-time baseball with some comedy, and it’s not bad at all.
The biggest reason I like this one is because this is the movie my boys grew up watching…a lot!
8. The Sandlot
This one reminds me of my days growing up playing ball with all the neighborhood kids.
Great movie about one of the greatest moments in baseball.
6. The Rookie
Honestly, this one made me tear up a bit. Every ex-ballplayer has the dream of making a comeback.
Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, and black & white. It’s a true story about Chicago White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton. Here’s the original trailer.
This one makes you hurt. Knowing when to call it quits in baseball is one of the toughest decisions to make.
3. The Natural
If you build it, they will come.
1. Bull Durham
This is, by far, the best baseball movie made. And, a movie that honestly depicts minor league ball in the Carolina League.
